"The collection, from which the following Tales are mainly taken, is one of great extent, obtained for the most part by MM. Grimm from the mouths of German peasants. The results of their labors ought to be peculiarly interesting to English readers, inasmuch as many of their national tales are proved to be of the highest Northern antiquity, and common to the parallel classes of society, in countries whose populations have been long and widely disjoined. Our Gammer Grethel, the supposed narrator of the stories [existed] under a different name. She was the Frau Viehm nnin, the wife of a peasant in the neighborhood of Hesse-Cassel; and from her mouth, a great portion of the stories were written down by MM. Grimm." (from the preface, pp. iii-v). Twelvemo. [2], xii, [2], 350 pp. Title page printed in black and red. Engraved frontisportrait. Engravings by Byfield from George Cruikshank's and Ludwig Grimm's designs. Orange cloth stamped decoratively in blind and gilt, rebacked with original gilt-decorated spine laid down. All edges gilt. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Cloth slightly soiled and toned. Very minor foxing, the occasional small stain, and slight browning to edges. A very good copy. First Cundall edition of a work published in 1823-26 as German Popular Tales. For the present edition, the work was revised and rearranged with an emphasis on the tales rather than on literary criticism. These tales include some of Cruikshank's (1792-1878) best work. Ruskin called his illustrations for Grimm "the finest things, next to Rembrandt's, that, as far as I know, have been done.

"A New Translation by Mrs. Edgar Lucas." A scarce copy of the original Rackham-illustrated "Grimm's Fairy Tales," it brought Arthur Rackham his enormous fame and prompted the publishing of the 1909 deluxe signed edition. The great illustrator himself pointed out in the 1909 edition's prefatory note: "Some years ago a selection of "Grimm's Fairy Tales" with one hundred illustrations of mine in black and white was published - in 1900, by Messrs. Freemantle and Co., and afterwards by Messrs. Archibald Constable & Co., Ltd. At intervals since then I have been at work on the original drawings, partially or entirely re-drawing some of them in colour, adding new ones in colour and in black and white, and generally overhauling them as a set, supplementing and omitting, with a view to the present edition. Of the forty coloured illustrations, many are elaborations of the earlier black and white drawings or are founded on them. The frontispiece, and those facing pp. 34, 70, 94, 104, 116, 118, and 190 are entirely new, and several of the text illustrations also have not been published before. The remaining illustrations in the text have been reconsidered and worked on again to a greater or lesser degree." 2.
